Avoid Wearing Shoes in the House
WNCNews – February 20, 2011 – Wearing shoes in the house becomes a habit that is done by many people. You should leave this habit to prevent dangerous diseases go in your house.
A microbiologist and professor at the University of Arizona, Dr. Charles Gerba, in 2008 worked with the shoemaker Rockport to study microorganisms that may be transported by shoes, especially if someone is wearing shoes in the house.
The results of these studies found that there are many germs that stick in the shoes, namely:
1. Escherichia coli (E. coli)
Escherichia coli is a bacteria that can cause disease, ranging from severe abdominal pain and diarrhea to kidney failure and death.
2. Serratia ficaria
Serratia ficaria causes gall bladder infection, bladder infections, respiratory tract, and sepsis.
3. Klebsiella pneumonia
This negative bacteria can destroy lung tissue quickly. In addition, this bacteria also cause pneumonia, wound and infection of bloodstream, causing death in 25 to 50 percent of patients.
In that study, 10 people were asked to use new shoes for two weeks, then conducted tests to know bacteria and germs that were in the shoes.
After two weeks, Dr. Gerba found that more than 420.000 units of bacteria on the outside of the shoes. From all the bacteria and germs, 27 percent are the deadly virus E. Coli. In addition, there are also Serratia ficaria and Klebsiella pneumonia.
“Most probable cause (96 percent) of the number of coliform bacteria and E. coli on the outside of the shoes indicates that the shoes are often in contact with feces (stool), which most likely came from the floor in public restrooms or contact with animals,” said Dr. Gerba.
Dr. Gerba also said, his research showed that the bacteria was in the house if someone is still wearing shoes in the house.
This is certainly worrisome to mothers and children, because 90 to 99 percent of bacteria and germs are transmitted to the carpet and tile in the house. Bacteria and germs that exist in the tile and carpet can be moved to the feet or hands, and then will carry over to the bed.
Dr. Gerba recommended to people to not wearing shoes in the house to prevent bacteria and germs enter to the house easily. You also should always clean your carpets and floor, and wash shoes to eliminate bacteria and germs.
